(Palm Beach, FL) – President-elect Trump is floating a change along the US southern border. In this case, it has more to do with names on a map. Trump — during a wide-ranging press conference at Mar-A-Lago, said the Gulf of Mexico would be better known as the “Gulf of America.” The president-elect went on to call it a “beautiful name.”
It marks the latest in a series of perhaps somewhat tongue-in-cheek ideas and proposals from Trump. These have included annexing Greenland (perhaps by purchasing it from Denmark), adding Canada as the 51st State, and the latest gulf rename proposal. In follow up to his comments, Georgia Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor-Greene posted on X that she plans to introduce legislation in order to get the name change done. She says the bill would aim to officially change the Gulf of Mexico to its “rightful name, the Gulf of America.”
As for Canada, Trump has again repeated the suggestion about US statehood — after Justin Trudeau announced his intention to resign as prime minister. And Donald Trump Jr. was in Greenland on Tuesday for a visit — though it has not been described as an “official” visit.
