What Do the 2024 NYC Crime Stats Say?

mixcollage-06-jan-2025-01-11-pm-2629

The NYPD released their official stats for 2024 on January 6, 2025 and said crime was down from the previous calendar year.

(New York, NY) – According to the official stats released by the NYPD, crime was down in 2024. Year-over-year, crime dropped 3% from 2023. Murders went down, as did burglaries, and robberies. The NYPD reports crime within the transit system dropped 1%.

That said, the number of rapes and felony assaults increased. Much has also been made of the way crime spiked significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic — with a yet-to-be-realized reduction to pre-pandemic levels for some categories. Others say they don’t feel safe in the subway given the random and disorderly nature of some assaults — including the highly concerning “being pushed on a subway” — which happened recently at 14th Street and is a constant concern for subway riders.

Also, despite the official account of lower subway crime, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has ordered 200 more officers to complete special subway train car patrols. In total, more cops will be deployed to the subways — which Tisch noting New Yorkers don’t “feel safe” within the subway system. Also, both Commissioner Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams have expressed frustration with the 2020 bail reform laws — they say that’s resulted in chronic, repeat offenders committing an outsized level of crime.
