Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981 and awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, photographed at the Peninsula Hotel in New York City, N. Y. On March 26, 2018.

(Atlanta, GA) – The Carter Center has announced the passing of the country’s 39th president. Carter died in Plains, Georgia surrounded by loved ones and family. He was the oldest living president, beating the record set by George H.W. Bush in 2019. Carter first entered hospice care in February 2023. He leaves behind 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Official plans for his funeral service are still pending. Carter served as commander in chief from 1977 to 1981. He lost a bid for reelection to 40th president Ronald Reagan. Carter’s single term was marred by foreign conflicts and economic turmoil. His life post-presidency was dedicated to defending democracy and public health. The Empire State Building will light up Red, White & Blue tonight in honor of the late world leader.
