(New York, NY) – The man accused of setting a sleeping woman on the subway on fire is due back in court at the beginning of the new year. Sebastian Zapeta is being indicted on murder charges for the gruesome death that occurred last Sunday morning. Zapeta allegedly torched the sleeping woman on a stalled F train at the Coney Island station and then began fanning the flames with a shirt. He then sat on a platform bench and watched as the woman burned to death.
Zapeta is facing charges including murder and arson, the full indictment is set to be unsealed at his arraignment. That court date is set for January 7th. Mayor Eric Adams has mentioned that he wants federal authorities involved since Zapeta is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the US illegally. However, the Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez says that since the crime happened in Brooklyn, the trial should also take place in the borough at the state level.
