(Marcy, NY) — Two hours of bodycam footage of New York correctional officers fatally beating a prisoner is being released. State Attorney General Letitia James made the video public Friday (Dec. 27, 2024), calling the footage “shocking and disturbing.”
The four, thirty-minute videos taken by body cameras depict the assault on inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility near Utica by numerous Correctional Officers. Based on statements given by Investigator Ryan Paparella, who viewed the video, two officers have been identified as David Kingsley and Nicholas Anzalone. D.A. James explained the body cameras were on standby mode but were not activated, meaning there is no sound.
Brooks died one day later as a result of his injuries. A preliminary report said he died from asphyxia due to compression to the neck.
Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered the state Department of Corrections to begin firing 14 workers at the facility where the incident occurred.
