(New York, NY) — Families celebrating both Christmas and Hanukkah will be able to do so on the same night tonight, for the first time in nearly two decades, thanks to the dating of the Hebrew calendar. The eight-night celebration of Hanukkah, also called the festival of lights, begins tonight at sundown. The next so-called Chrismukkah will take place in 2035.
The world’s largest menorah will be lit tonight in midtown for night one of Hanukkah. The 36 foot tall menorah, at the corner of 59th and 5th Avenue is so large that people lighting it need a cherry picker to reach the top of it. Organizers with Chabad-Lubavitch say the menorah will brighten the city during this fraught time for Jews due to a rise in antisemitism and war in Israel.
