(Brooklyn, NY) – Luigi Mangione arrived in New York this past week to plenty of fanfare and a mayoral escort. This Monday, Mangione is due back in court to face 11 state charges in relation to the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson. The 26-year-old ivy league graduate was arrested a week after the Manhattan shooting in Altoona, Pennsylvania. One of the charges he is facing includes murder with a terrorism enhancement. Mangione is being detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where some other notable names including Sean “Diddy” Combs and Sam Bankman-Fried are being held.
Over the weekend, supporters for Mangione gathered in Washington Square Park comparing him to Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela. It comes as a recent Emerson College poll found that 41 percent of voters aged 18-29 support Mangione and deem his actions as “acceptable”. On Saturday Night Live, Weekend Update hosts were shocked after the studio audience erupted into applause for Mangione.
