(New York, NY) – Charges are being upgraded to first-degree murder as terrorism against Luigi Mangione in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan earlier this month. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the grand jury indictment Tuesday (December 17, 2024).
Mangione is still in custody in Pennsylvania after being arrested at a McDonald’s on December 9th. He’s accused of fatally shooting Thompson on a New York City sidewalk on December 4th. Luigi Mangione is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on gun and forgery charges Thursday. DA Bragg says there are indications Mangione may not fight extradition after all, including the hiring of a high profile New York attorney to his defense team.
He faces 20 years to life in prison if convicted of first degree murder. The indictment includes a dozen charges including first and second degree murder as well as several weapon charges.
