(New York, NY) — A new study out of Spain finds walking seven-thousand steps a day could stave off of depression. Researchers for years have have connected exercise to good mental health. The Spanish study is the first to connect step counts to depression.

Researchers looked at 33 studies of nearly 100-thousand people and found that those who walk seven-thousand steps a day are 31-percent less likely to be depressed. And the risk reduction benefit soared to 40-percent for those who did ten-thousand steps.

The study also found walking locations, such as the woods helped mental health along with some of the social connections that are made by walking around the neighborhood everyday.  The study is published in the medical journal JAMA Public Open.
