NJ man and his mom trapped in Syria

(Trenton, NJ) — A New Jersey man, who flew from Newark to Syria three weeks ago to care for his aging mother, is now stuck there.  Rebels took over the war torn country the day before Besher Cabbad could board a plane back to Newark Airport. Cabbad went to Syria, despite warnings from the State Department after his 84-year-old mom broke her hip. His wife back in New Jersey is working with local lawmakers to help him get home.

Cabbad has reportedly tried to cross the Syrian border with his mother into Turkey to catch a plane, but has been turned away by Turkish authorities. He and his mother both have American passports.

New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer says he has been working around the clock to help Cabbad get out of Syria. He says he is very upset to hear that Turkish border patrol agents are turning away American citizens. The Congressman is demanding Turkey let the pair through so they can get back home in time for Christmas.
