(New York, NY) – Mayor Eric Adams is vowing to deport migrants who commit crimes, deflecting reports that non-violent immigrants could be affected. Adams is promising to protect the rights of hard-working immigrants who give back to the community but says the city won’t be a safe haven for those who commit violent crimes.
He said he and Homan talked about how to go after these individuals. Adams says the city has made terrible mistakes in the past that resulted in violent offenders on the city’s streets, particularly dangerous gangs. He denied the effort could expand to undocumented immigrants like Dreamers, saying concerns that Homan intends to do that are distorted.
Homan has threatened to withhold funding from sanctuary cities that don’t cooperate with deportation plans. New York is a sanctuary city but Adams has said he would like local law enforcement to work with federal immigration agents. Some protestors are condemning the meeting with critics arguing that Adams, who is facing federal corruption charges, is just trying to gain favor with the incoming Trump administration.
