(Washington, DC) — FBI Director Christopher Wray is resigning, clearing the way for President-elect Trump to nominate Kash Patel to head the agency.
Wray was under increasing pressure from Republicans to quit now, rather than force President-elect Trump to replace him with former Justice Department prosecutor Kash Patel. He told his staff “this is the best way to avoid dragging the Bureau deeper into the fray,” adding he would stay on until the end of the Biden administration. Wray was appointed by Trump in 2017.
Wray still had three years remaining on his 10-year term. Some in the FBI worried his departure would normalize Trump’s penchant for replacing FBI directors he doesn’t like, as the position is supposed to straddle administrations and be insulated from politics.
