(New York, NY) — The NYPD is gathering more evidence in the hunt for the gunman who fatally shot United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2024) morning.
Police may have found the backpack belonging to the suspect. Friday (Dec. 6, 2024) afternoon, the NYPD found a similar backpack in Central Park which is where police believed the suspect ditched his bag. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny says the suspect rode a bike away from the scene of the shooting, before ditching it to get into a taxi cab. The suspect then took the taxi to an interstate bus terminal, leading police to believe he isn’t in New York City anymore.
Police are trying track purchases of what’s believed to be a rare pistol he used to murder Thompson. Authorities also recovered DNA off a water bottle the suspect bought at a Starbucks.
Detectives have been combing through a lot of surveillance video that shows the suspect and his moves throughout the city before and after the killing. Reports are he arrived on a bus from Atlanta ten days prior to the murder and while most video shows him with a mask on, there’s a surveillance photo showing nearly his whole face while smiling.
