City Trees Are Feeling the Drought

(New York, NY) – Arborists are raising the alarm for the limited greenery throughout the city. There are more than 660,000 trees that line streets across the city. However, those trees are parched after a record dry spell that prompted a drought warning. There are four levels of drought advisories in New York, and the city recently upgraded the drought watch to a drought warning. Now, Gothamist reports city street trees are “dangerously dehydrated”.

Experts point out that while the trees in city parks are cared for by employees with the parks department, the ones that line the street do not get that same care and attention. Local residents are typically the ones to pick up the slack and care for the trees. Young trees, being defined as those under 2 years old, need up to 20 gallons of water each week. That’s equivalent to one inch of rain – which we are still in a rain deficit for this time of year by about 8 inches.
