(New York, NY) –New York City Comptroller Brad Lander says the New York City Housing Authority spent 135-million dollars on apartment repairs in 2022 and 2023, and it’s unclear if all the work paid for was all completed. The audit shows close to half of the sampled purchase orders didn’t show evidence the contracted work was actually performed. Lander says there were inadequate controls over payments to contractors doing the work inside apartments across the city.
One-third of those who had repairs done to their apartments rated the work as “poor”. Lander told reporters at a press conference Wednesday, “We know for years and now really for decades, NYCHA has struggled and too-often failed to deliver the basic warranty of habitability, the basic quality of life that every single New Yorker deserves,” The investigation into payments began after 70 NYCHA employees were indicted on corruption charges for accepting bribes.
