(Washington, DC) – President-elect Trump has vowed to fire Special Counsel Jack Smith “within seconds” of his being inaugurated this coming January. He may not get the chance. The word is that Smith and his team are planning to resign before Trump is sworn in.
Smith, who has been prosecuting Trump in the so-called classified documents case and alleged election interference case, faced an uncertain future with the Biden-Harris administration coming to an end. For one thing, the case alleging Trump improperly kept documents dating back to his first term has been dismissed. Also, the alleged election interference case is also up in the air. That’s tied to the events of January 6, 2021. Just five days ago Smith asked the judge in that case to put the process on hold.
It’s not clear if Smith’s final report will be made public prior to Trump’s inauguration. He’s required to provide it to Attorney General Merrick Garland — who can then choose to release it if he’s so inclined.
