(New York, NY) – Republicans will take control of the US Senate, having secured at least 51 seats in Congress’ upper chamber. In making that happen, Republican businessman Bernie Moreno flipped a Senate seat in Ohio, defeating incumbent Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown. This marks the first time the GOP held a Senate majority in four years. Republican Senators Ted Cruz of Texas, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, and Rick Scott of Florida all held their seats. Democratic US Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, a former candidate for president, also won re-election.

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York won re-election as an incumbent. Andy Kim, a New Jersey Congressman, won the Senate seat once held by Bob Menendez before he resigned in disgrace.

New York voters approved Proposition One, which is controversial. It’s supporters call it an equal rights bill, aimed at protecting the right to abortion and other liberties. But its detractors say it will lead to illegal immigrants voting in elections and biological men playing in girls’ sports.
