(New York, NY) – The New York Liberty were celebrating their historic win through the Canyon of Heroes, and an unofficial team member took center stage. Ellie the Elephant, the team’s mascot, was the life of the party at City Hall.

Ellie’s name is a nod to Ellis Island, and she only recently became the team’s mascot in 2021. According to the team’s website, the change was symbolic when the team moved their home base from Madison Square Garden to the Brooklyn Barclays Center. Back in 1883, PT Barnum proved that the Brooklyn Bridge was safe for travel by bringing 21 elephants across to prove its strength. The team says that elephants represent “power, wisdom, and determination” along with loyalty and determination. It is still a secret as to who wears the trunk mask and whips around the gray and sea foam green braid.
