(New York, NY) – The city is rolling out a new effort to prevent fires caused by faulty e-bikes and electric scooters. It is part of a broad fight to curb the deadly, explosive fires caused by lithium ion batteries. Now after a $2 million investment, certain workers can trade in their motorized bikes and scooters for certified models or a new battery.
Mayor Eric Adams says that people will often have these batteries by an exit, making the fires that much more dangerous. Beginning next year, city residents over the age of 18 that made at least $1,500 delivering food in 2024 can apply for that trade-in.
