(Atlanta, GA) — The Centers for Disease Control says that whooping cough cases have surged to record levels. CDC data shows four times as many cases this year compared to last. The statistics show 16-thousand confirmed cases with two deaths, with the highest number of cases in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and the West Coast.

Babies under a year old are at greatest risk of developing whooping cough and having severe complications, including apnea and pneumonia. Health experts blame the surge on missed vaccinations, a trend that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.
