(New York, NY) — It’s day three of the International Longshoremen’s union port strike. Union president Harold Daggett says his members wont go back to work until there is airtight language in a new contract that will guarantee there will be no automation at shipping ports. The walkout by 45-thousand dockworkers has halted shipping ports along the east and gulf coast.
The work stoppage has created uncertainty about the movement of supplies just as we head into the holiday season. Experts say the strike is costing the economy billions of dollars a day.
The union is also looking for higher wages. New York Governor Kathy Hochul says the state will work to minimize disruptions and ensure grocery stores and medical facilities have essential products.
