(New York, NY) – Dockworkers at 36 ports along the East Coast and Gulf Coast are on strike for the first time in decades. While shoppers might not notice an immediate change, experts warn that if the strike continues for weeks, it could possibly cause delays and higher prices for goods.

Most stores had already stocked up on holiday items, but a long strike could mean late deliveries of toys, coffee, and even cars. Perishable goods like bananas might be affected quickly since these ports handle 75% of the bananas in the U.S.

The strike could also cause problems for exports and create backups at West Coast ports, where different workers are involved. Analysts estimate that the East and Gulf Coast strike could cost the economy about $4.5 billion every day.

Retailers were hoping for a quick resolution, and President Biden says he has been monitoring the situation. However, when asked if he would intervene, he said no. Mayor Eric Adams also says that he supports the workers and does not believe Biden should intervene. The White House is still working hard to help with negotiations and is keeping an eye on potential supply chain issues.
