(Elizabeth, NJ) — The White House is pleading with the longshoreman’s union to try and hash out a new contract before Tuesday’s strike deadline. Workers want a better hourly wage and a total ban on automation. They worry automation will put thousands of workers on the unemployment line in coming years.
The walkout would be felt in ports in places like Elizabeth, New Jersey and all across the country. It could very tough for Americans to get their hands on household goods, fruit, cars and toys and clothing. It could devastate the Christmas shopping season.
The International Longshoremen’s Association and United States Maritime Alliance, which represents 36 seaports have said they are at an impasses that cannot be rectified before the deadline.
