(Undated) – According to health officials, “laughing gas” is the newest trend when it comes to young kids and getting high. Technically known as nitrous oxide, teenagers have reportedly been seeking out products from Galaxy Gas — an Atlanta, Georgia based company. Galaxy Gas’ products are intended for use in culinary products. The stainless steel nitrous oxide cartridges have been sought out by party goers for years.
Sometimes nicknamed “wom woms” because of the pulsating feeling users experience immediately afterwards, laughing gas hits are also called “whip-its.” It’s becoming increasing popular among teens in both the US and UK. Typically users inflate a large balloon with the gas and then huff it that way.
The dangerous trend can cause numerous health problems, including unconsciousness. A 2018 study from CNN shows the trend is on the rise. Social media sites are also part of the issue, as videos promoting the use of laughing gas have trended and gone viral. Some sites are trying to crackdown on those images and videos being shared. Now, searches on TikTok for “Galaxy Gas” result in telephone numbers being provided for help lines — as well as resources concerning substance abuse.
