(New York, NY)_ There’s a new task force in town and it has nothing to do with Halloween!
City officials say drivers using ghost cars are not only not paying tolls, but the vehicles are often used in serious crimes. A “ghost car” is one which has fake, covered or missing license plates.
The task force comprised of 15 officers will work with the sanitation department in towing away the vehicles while they are parked. In addition, other enforcement efforts on ghost cars are targeting them while moving on streets or at toll plazas. The new task force just started its operations and in the first five days removed 295 ghost cars.
The MTA says it has recovered nearly 100-percent of tolls owed by drivers who chronically blow off paying and have intercepted eleven-thousand vehicles from repeat offenders.
