(New York, NY) – New York City Hall’s chief counsel, Lisa Zornberg, is stepping down from her role in Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, following the recent resignation of NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban. Zornberg, who has been the city’s top attorney since July 2023, announced her departure Saturday, amid an ongoing federal investigation into members of Adams’ inner circle.
“I am deeply grateful to Mayor Adams for giving me the opportunity to serve the city,” Zornberg said in her brief statement, expressing her support for the mayor’s work.
Mayor Adams also thanked Zornberg, acknowledging the challenging nature of her job and stating that he plans to announce her replacement soon.
Zornberg’s exit follows a major corruption probe that has implicated key figures in city government. Federal investigators recently raided the homes of Caban and other NYPD officials, seizing electronic devices as part of a broader investigation. Caban’s twin brother, James, is also being scrutinized for allegedly using his consulting business to influence high-end Manhattan establishments.
Other officials, including Deputy Mayor Phil Banks and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, are also under investigation, though no charges have been filed.
Caban resigned last Thursday to avoid further distractions for the NYPD. “The recent developments have created a distraction for our department,” Caban wrote in a letter to NYPD officers. Former FBI official Tom Donlon will serve as acting commissioner as Adams looks to name a permanent replacement.
