(New York, NY) – New York City cops are making moves aimed at improving the Midtown Manhattan tourism experience. Residents in the area have also complained about overcrowding with illegal sidewalk vendors and pedicab operators flooding the area.
There have been widespread reports of pedicab operators ripping off tourists, with them advertising rates that are well below what the cash amount they later demand. Also, some of the pedicabs are using unauthorized motors and loud speakers in violation of regulations.
In response the NYPD launched “Operation Front Door,” and cops specifically focused on stopping price-gouging pedicabs. Dozens of pedicabs were reportedly seized. Officers also removed fake merchandise and phony designer goods being sold along the sidewalks of Manhattan.
Officials say the operation was launched after numerous complaints were received from residents in the area. Illegal vendors and pedicabs are considered “quality of life” issues, drawing out a response from City Hall.
