NYPD Commissioner Caban Resigns

NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban has faced numerous calls to resign after the FBI raided his home -- allegedly in connection to a scheme involving night clubs.

(New York, NY) – New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban is resigning his position amid an FBI probe into his brother James Caban. FBI agents raided the commissioner’s home last week, allegedly as part of an investigation into possible corruption. Reports have indicated the feds are probing claims that James Caban put pressure on night clubs to do business with him.

Mayor Eric Adams had defended Caban earlier this week saying he’s a veteran of law enforcement, but he also sounded somewhat noncommittal on the top cop’s future. He provided a taped video statement earlier today and announced he had named Tom Donlon as interim NYPD commissioner. He’s a prominent former FBI and counterterrorism official.

Reports say Caban explained his decision to resign in an email. He cited “news around recent developments,” saying they had “created a distraction for our department.” Caban added “I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work, or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD.”

Both Caban and his brother James had their homes raided. Top lieutenants in the NYPD had phones and electronics seized — and that’s true for the Caban brothers as well. Deputy Mayor Keesha Wright, who was also raided, has maintained she did nothing wrong. She’s married to Schools Chancellor David Banks. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks — the chancellor’s brother — had his home in Hollis, Queens, raided.
