(New York, NY) – Just ahead of the first day of school, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Schools Chancellor David Banks announced that 24 new buildings will be opening this academic year. The largest public school district in the country is getting some much needed seats across four boroughs.
Brooklyn saw the most change with nine new buildings; there’s eight in the Bronx, six in Queens and one in Manhattan. In total the new buildings now add 11,010 new seats. This marks the biggest addition in K-12 seats opened up in over two decades.
The buildings will feature cutting-edge technology and inventive spaces for learning. The buildings also feature spaces that can be repurposed for other uses to serve the larger community. Mayor Adams says that with “ science labs, music rooms, sensory gyms, and more, these new schools are going to be incredible spaces for students and staff alike”. The work does not stop there – the recently adopted 2025-2029 Capital Plan sets aside funding for over 33,000 additional seats to continue expansion efforts.
