(Crown Heights, Brooklyn NY) – The annual New York Caribbean Carnival will be held this Monday. The celebration is the nation’s largest Caribbean cultural festival, attracting more than a million jubilant participants and spectators. Costumes and steel drum music are some of the main attractions. The West Indian Day Parade kicks off at 10am along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.
The NYPD will be out in full force in Brooklyn this holiday weekend to ensure a safe J’Ouvert and West Indian Day parade. Police say that includes the use of drones, which they used last year to mitigate a tough situation along the parade route on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights. They will also wand people at all entry points, have temporary cameras set up and crack down on illegal parties. In addition, police are working closely with the community, which they credit with the reduction in violence at the annual celebration in recent years.
