(Albany, New York) – Governor Kathy Hochul signed a popular bill into law allowing small craft makers of spirits, cider and mead, to be able to ship their products directly to consumers. Hochul signing the pandemic-era bill makes it a permanent addition to the alcohol scene in New York.
The law will go into effect in 90 days, in time for the holiday season. Liquor store owners in the state oppose the bill saying changing the rules can drive them out of the business. A group representing cider makers had said if they can’t ship their product and reach a wider audience, they’ll go out of business.
Hochul defends the new law saying this legislation levels the playing field, allowing small producers to reach new markets and foster economic growth across the state.
