(New York, NY) – Disgraced former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein will stay in New York as he awaits his upcoming retrial before he’s sent to California to serve his sentence there. Queens DA Melinda Katz made the announcement August 19th after Weinstein was formally arraigned on a warrant issued by Governor Hochul.
California requested Weinstein’s extradition to the Golden State to begin his 16-year sentence on separate sex crimes after his New York rape conviction was overturned in April. Katz says following the New York retrial on rape charges, that include rape claims from more women than those who came forward in his original conviction, Weinstein will serve the California sentence first because it is now his primary sentence. His New York re-trial is tentatively scheduled for November.
Weinstein has battled diabetes, spinal stenosis, and fluid on his heart and lungs while in jail.
