Murphy has tabbed his former chief of staff, George Helmy, as the temporary replacement for disgraced US Senator Bob Menendez.

(Trenton, NJ) – New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has tabbed the interim replacement for US Senator Bob Menendez. Murphy’s former chief of staff George Helmy will replace US Senator Bob Menendez — who is set to resign later this month after being convicted of bribery and corruption.

Helmy, a resident of Mountain Lakes and health care executive, also worked on Murphy’s re-election campaign in 2021. He says his only goal is to help restore New Jerseyans trust in the office before a replacement is elected in November. Murphy calls Helmy an ideal caretaker for the seat, adding he feels there will be an easy tradition for whoever is the Senator-elect this fall.

Helmy is 44-years-old and a graduate of Rutgers University. He also graduated from Glen Ridge High School and received a graduate degree from Harvard University.

Senator Menendez has faced numerous calls to resign following his indictment and eventual conviction for bribery and corruption. He received gifts like cash, a luxury car, and even gold bars, in exchange for helping foreign businessmen.
