On Elvis Death Day, a Graceland Arrest

An arrest has been made following what cops have called an attempt to defraud Elvis Presley's family. Every August 16, fans come together to remember Elvis -- as he died on that day in 1977.

(Memphis, TN) – Every August 16, fans of “The King” come together and celebrate Elvis Presley — as it was on that day in 1977 when he passed away. The night before, Graceland hosted a remembrance event where people gathered. The Memphis, Tennessee home was formerly Elvis’ residence, and serves as a sort of museum to the musician and performer’s life. Elvis and several of his family members are also buried there.

At the same time, the US Department of Justice has announced the arrest of a Missouri woman, who is accused of trying to defraud the Presley family. Federal prosecutors say 53-year-old Lisa Jeanine Findley was arrested Friday morning. She stands accused of stealing millions of dollars from the family, as well as attempting to bilk them out of their ownership interest in the Graceland mansion and surrounding grounds.

Authorities say the scheme involved Findley posing as several different individuals in an alleged caper involving a fake private lender. The accused allegedly claimed — falsely — that Lisa Marie Presley had borrowed $3.8 million from a lender and put up Graceland as collateral. From that point, Findley attempted to put the property up for auction after filing a false creditor’s claim and fake deed of trust — according to prosecutors. Investigators also say a fraudulent foreclosure notice was filed.

If convicted, Findley could face up to 20 years in prison.
