(Newark, NJ) – Two separate police chases unfolded during a 24-hour period in New Jersey — and in one case, cops shot a man dead. The first incident took place around 8:00 PM Monday night in Newark’s South Ward. Cops had given chase of a vehicle and eventually pulled a man from the driver’s side. At that point a male suspect jumped behind the wheel and drove off, hitting a police officer.
That’s when members of Newark PD opened fire and killed the suspect. The office of the New Jersey Attorney General will investigate, as is the case with every police-involved shooting in the Garden State.
A separate police chase took place, beginning in Bergen County, and continuing on the Garden State Parkway. Paramus Police say they pursued a vehicle that then fled, leading officers on the parkway. From there, cops deployed a spike strip, which was effective — causing the driver of the pursued vehicle to lose control. The suspect’s car went through a guardrail and rolled over a grassy embankment in Elmwood Park. Three suspects that had been inside the car were arrested, while one other person got away from police.
