(Paris, France) – Algerian boxer Iman Khelif has been at the center of a gender controversy in women’s sports. It began with a match against Italian boxer Angela Carini who forfeited after 46 seconds shouting that the match was unfair. This sparked discussions online that Khelif should not be allowed to compete as a female boxer, with one of the more outspoken voices on the issue being owner of X, Elon Musk.
The same day that Khelif won the gold against China, lawyers for Khelif filed a complaint with Parisian prosecutors claiming she was a victim of “aggravated online harassment”. The Algerian Olympic Committee also filed an official complaint with the IOC citing a “violation of sports ethics” in the treatment of Khelif.
