(Paris, France) – Lauren Scruggs was facing fellow American fencer, Lee Kiefer, in the women’s final individual foil. Scruggs was able to make the first touch but then Kiefer ran away with the win. USA took the top two spots at the podium with Kiefer getting the gold and Scruggs securing the silver medal.
Scruggs made history as the first Black woman to win a medal in individual fencing. She is also the second LGBTQ+ competitor to make it to the podium in Paris. Scruggs grew up in Queens and started fencing with her brother at a camp in Brooklyn. She also attends Harvard University and studies philosophy.
