NYC Students Get a Break on Their Commute

(New York, NY) –  New York City is making it easier and more affordable for students to ride the subway system.  MTA Chair Janno Lieber says eligible students will be getting student OMNY cards instead of MetroCards and they will have up to four free rides per day with no time restrictions.  This is a change from the previous school year when students had only three free trips per day and they could only be used on school days and during certain times.
Mayor Eric Adams says this is another effort to prevent fare beaters, as many students who couldn’t afford the fare to get to and from school would simply jump the turnstiles.
City officials say the extra ride and elimination of time restrictions will help students with getting to and from internships, extra curricular activities and appointments.  The cards will be distributed at the start of the school year.
