(New York, NY) – Almost 200 people have reported infections of dengue in New Jersey and New York so far this year. That’s according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. New York has tallied up 143 cases while the Garden State has reported 41 people infected.

The ailment is typically rare for the tri-state region but recently the number of cases have been increasing. Dengue is a virus that is spread through mosquitoes. The type of mosquito has been expanding its reach around the globe and scientists put the blame on climate change.

There is currently no medication for the virus, however most people typically recover within a week. Symptoms to watch out for are fever, nausea, vomiting and skin rash. Experts say that anyone traveling to a tropical area should cover up and use plenty of bug repellent. So far, none of the mosquitos carrying the virus have been detected in the Tri-State.
