A beach in the Hamptons has been given a dubious distinction: it's now among the nation's top ten worst shorefronts in terms of fecal matter issues.

(Southampton, NY) – The Hamptons is well-known as a classy, expensive, high-end spot to go to the beach. But according to a recent survey, it’s pretty crappy as well. The Surfrider Foundation has informed the New York Post that Southampton’s Mecox Bay has exceeded the amount of pathogens that are considered safe — per New York’s state-level standards. That said, real estate values are high there, so don’t think it’s going to help you snag a steal on a new beach house.
So what gives? Reports say there is excess runoff from businesses and homes in the area, old septic tanks, and endangered birds who roost nearby — and all of those cause issues. Those combined factors seemingly never allow the ocean’s moving waters to purify Mecox Bay. But still — have your checkbook ready if you’re planning on investing in a spot out there — mansions nearby costs tens of millions of dollars.
