Are More People “Super Commuting”?

mixcollage-05-jun-2024-09-17-am-7585

New research out of Stanford University suggests the "super commuting" trend is on the rise.

(New York, NY) – There have been one-offs and stories going viral about people who have so-called “super commutes”. Some people live in Ohio but work in New York, or live on Long Island and work in Boston. It seems the trend is on the rise. “Super commuting” is defined as people who commute to work a distance of 75 miles or more.

And since 2020 — during the pandemic — “super commuting” is on the rise. New research out of Stanford University says the number of people traveling for work over that 75 miles threshold has risen 32% since 2002. The majority of all commutes remain less than 35 miles — but the percentage of those with the shorter commute distance is declining. It seems people who are higher earners as well as younger workers are opting to live farther away from where their office is located. From 2019 to 2023, the average work distance rose 17 miles.
