(New York, NY) — Kids on a Brownsville, Brooklyn playground went running for cover Monday night after bullets hit two young girls. A 9-year-old took a bullet to the leg. An 11-year-old was shot in the back as they played at the Hilltop Playground on Dean Street around 9 p.m. Parents say the playground had just recently opened.

Doctors say the two injured girls are in stable condition and expected to recover.  Police were at the playground for hours interviewing those who witnessed the shooting. They believe the gunmen were gang members who may have been firing at each other. They do not believe the children were their intended targets. Police think six shots were fired in all. They are searching through nearby surveillance cameras hoping that will help them identify the gunmen. There have been no arrests.
