(East Hampton, NY) – There are lots of odd birds in New York. But in this case, the bird just looks out of place!
An American Flamingo has been spotted on Long Island. More specifically, the tropical bird was spotted in the waters of Georgica Pond in East Hampton. The odd sighting last week has people asking questions: how did it get here?
American Flamingos are native to the West Indies, northern South America, and the Yucatán Peninsula. Bird experts say a storm may have blown the bird off course. Long time birders have noted it’s not the first time an American Flamingo was seen on Long Island. Newspaper archives from the Long Island Advance say a flamingo was spotted at Peat Hole in Bellport. The paper, dated November 16, 1978 includes a photo of the bird. The same article mentions four other recorded sightings, including one in 1970 in Shinnecock.
