(Jersey City, NJ) – US Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey — who is on trial for bribery and corruption — will run for re-election as an Independent. Menendez has apparently secured the needed 800 signatures ahead of tomorrow’s deadline, meaning he will secure his place on the ballot ahead of the November fifth general election.
Federal prosecutors say Senator Menendez and his wife Nadine engaged in a bribery scheme that saw them accept cash, gold bars, an apartment, and a Mercedes. The couple allegedly agreed to help Egyptian businessmen in their dealings with the US government. That also led to a meat monopoly in Egypt, per prosecutors.
Prosecutors have laid out their argument that Nadine Menendez was in especially dire financial straits prior to engaging in the alleged bribery scheme. She will be tried separately, because she’s undergoing treatment for cancer. Senator Menendez’ attorneys have argued he was unaware of his wife’s attempts to secure shady dealings. He’s also rebuffed repeated calls to resign.
