(Queens, New York) – Two NYPD officers were injured in a shootout early Monday morning with a suspect on a scooter in Elmhurst, queens. One of the officers was struck in the upper leg, while the other officer clipped in the stomach. The officers were taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition and recovering.
The cops were shot while trying to pull over a man who the NY Post says is a 19-year-old Venezuelan migrant, Bernardo Castro Mata. During the stop, the suspect hopped off his moped, and tried to flee on foot.
Mata was shot in the lower leg, and taken to NY Presbyterian Hospital in Queens.
The shootout happened around 1:40am at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and 8th Street.Â
