(New York, New York) – New York City public school class sizes are set to shrink for the second year in a row. The DOE (Dept. of Education) is trying to meet state requirements for class sizes. The law puts limits on classroom sizes from kindergarten to high school; kindergarten through third-grade classes are limited to 20 students; fourth through eighth grade to 23, and high school classes, 25 students.
The schools are given until 2028 to hire enough teachers to shrink their class sizes and adjust for the higher amounts of classes taught. Physical education and performing groups, such as band or choir classes are limited to 40 students in one classroom.
