(Trenton, NJ) — Senator Bob Menendez may be standing trial on bribery charges, but he wants New Jersey voters to know that he is still running for re-election this November as an Independent. The senator has enlisted a group of friends to gather 800 signatures for the petitions, which must be turned in by June 4th.
Jurors in Senator Menendez’s corruption trial return to a lower Manhattan courtroom today after getting a week-long recess. Federal prosecutors have been laying the groundwork in their corruption case against the New Jersey Democrat. Last Tuesday, there was testimony that Menendez’ soon-to-be wife Nadine got a mortgage loan and was paid ten-thousand-dollars a month for a “no show” job at a Halal meat company in exchange for the veteran Senator’s political influence with Egypt. Jurors were also shown photos of piles of cash and gold bars found hidden in the couple’s Englewood Cliffs home.
