The origins of Memorial Day date back to the post Civil War period, during which people in the North and South dedicated war graves with flowers. Now it is always held the final Monday in May, as a federal holiday.

(New York, NY) – New Yorkers are coming together on this Memorial Day 2024 and remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. At the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum on Manhattan’s West Side, a ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM. This will include comments from Mayor Eric Adams as well as the unfurling of a US flag. There will also be a three-volley rifle salute and the traditional laying of wreaths in the Hudson River.
Throughout the weekend there were events planned at the Intrepid, as Fleet Week 2024 was also underway. Meanwhile, at 11:00 AM in Brooklyn, the annual Memorial Day Parade will step off. There are also parades and celebrations planned throughout New Jersey, with nearly every county holding a parade or remembrance of some kind.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has asked residents to honor the fallen this Memorial Day. Moments of silence will be observed at noon and 6:00 PM. Cars are asked to pull off to the side of the road at that time. Immediately afterwards, firehouses and police precincts will sound their alarms, sirens, and horns. All of the churches in the diocese of Rockville Centre will ring their bells.
