(New York, NY) – Big changes are reportedly coming for future editions of the MTA Movie & TV Awards — and the event won’t be held this year. The network calls this a “pause” for the awards show. Apparently MTV plans to reintroduce it at a future date with a reimagined format.
In recent years years the awards show has faced numerous disruptions and cancelations. Last year MTV instead aired a highlight show that was pre-taped — as the Hollywood writers strike was underway. In 2020, like so many other events, the MTV Movie & TV Awards were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the VMAs (Video Music Awards) have the Moon Men statues, the MTA Movie & TV awards give out a small trophy that looks like a box of popcorn — the “Golden Popcorn”. Originally called the MTV Movie Awards, it launched in 1992 — and adopted its current name (while including TV honors) in 2017.
