(New York, NY) — Rikers Island jail will be kid friendly on Mother’s Day after a make-over. There’s a new playcenter at the jail just in time for Mother’s Day visits. The remodel was done by the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and opened on Tuesday for the children and grandkids of the female prisoners. There’s a sign outside the new playroom that reads, “Inmates are permitted to hold their children during the visit.” There are interactive wall displays, including one that is a map of New York City, complete with buttons, when pushed make the sounds of the city. The museum said in a statement that child friendly exhibits will also be added to the men’s facility at the jail over the next year.
People who are behind bars at Rikers, are either waiting for their court cases to be heard or are serving short sentences.
